Oh, uh, golly! Sorry for being surprised, it's just that folks don't come around here much anymore. Not since Owen did the redesign. It's good that he did, because this site is super rudimentary. Owen was still learning how to code when he built this, so freshweb was in desperate need of a refresh! If you're on mobile, you know what I'm talking about. Don't even get me started on the utter lack of semantic tags! It's all for the best, and now I can just hang around until the tech oligarchs take over!

I am Owen Cook (He/Him), a Graphic Design student at Portland State University.

Born and raised here in Portland, Oregon, I first found my passion for design while taking an art class at Clackamas Community College. I found a connection with the challenge of using creative problem solving to make interesting visual solutions. From there, I transferred my credits to PSU to continue my journey as a designer.

My areas of interest in the field are UI/UX, Web Development, and Motion Design. I am most fascinated with how we as users interact with technology and interfaces.

Tech Monopolies Op-Ed

Coin Boy: Arcade App Prototype

A class project that focused on taking an everyday object and turning it into a better user interface. I took an arcade playcard and built an app prototype to create a more engaging and frictionless user experience.

Fresh Air: Spacial Design Project

A class project that challenged me to design a space for people to gather in. I built my concept around the idea of an open, communal space that compensated for the contemporary loss of 'third-places' for most people.

Be Like Us!: Beverage Packaging Project

A class project that involved designing packaging for a beverage, which I took as an opportunity to create a unique, conceptual piece about a program (drink-presenting code) that androids could download to feel human emotions.

Gothic Grub: Food Truck Project

A self-initiated design that revisited the final of a old class, where I took a design for a food truck and turned it into a well-rounded brand for a medieval-inspired food truck, including a menu, business card, and an Instagram page mockup.

The Sunrise Project: An Awareness Campaign

A class project about using typography to promote a campaign of my design, which I directed towards a fun branding and merch-focused awareness campaign for promoting the benefits of solar energy. Contents can be found on a Figma website mockup.

A Beginner's Guide to Leverless Controllers Mainly for Fighting Games

A class project where I had to deconstruct an object. I created a zine about the leverless controller that has grown popular within the fighting game community in order to give an introduction to what this unique piece of technology is.

Monopolization Within the Tech Industry and the Danger That It Poses

A class project that involved writing a visual op-ed using both writing and images. After reading other Op-Eds, I was inspired to write a piece on how the Chinese superapp WeChat and the Big 5 in American Tech are establishing themselves a threat to our society.
